August is South African Women’s Month, a time when we reflect on the journey of women’s rights and collectively celebrate the women making their mark in our country. At Winecellar.co.za, it’s an opportunity to honour leading women in wine by shining a spotlight on their craft – and who better to do so than the country’s foremost experts on fine wine, with a team that includes respected industry professionals and judges. Not only is Wine Cellar best placed to introduce fine wine lovers to leading South African and European producers, but also to support SA’s rising stars.

The fourth Cab Franc Carnival will take place at the beautiful Vrede en Lust Estate which is located in the centre of the Cape Winelands between Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek on Saturday 27 August from 11h00 to 16h00.

Cabernet Franc and red wine lovers will be treated to some of the best Cabernet Franc wines South Africa has to offer.  As a single varietal it has made strides over the past two decades and approximately 80 wineries in South Africa now produce a single varietal Cabernet Franc.

Think you have it all figured out when it comes to wine tasting? Nederburg’s The Manor restaurant and wine tasting hub in Paarl has teamed up with Freedom Coffee to offer wine and coffee lovers a slightly unusual tasting experience.

The Brew Tasting comprises a selection of Nederburg’s delicious white and red wines, as well as some top-notch single origin and blended coffees by Freedom Coffee, and edibles like dried mango, prunes, grapes, white chocolate with nuts and raspberries, dark chocolate and fatty biltong.

From now until the end of September, the winery will be offering a limited-edition hot chocolate wine tasting of four red wines each paired with four different hand-crafted chocolate bombs, to add to steaming milk.

The tasting forms part of the winery’s creative exploration of flavours by pairing their cool climate wines with interesting foods to enrich the appreciation of their award-winning wines.

While Port-style wines are arguably one of the most underrated categories of wine, it is also one of the most resilient. Port-style wines have faced many a challenge, with the last few years being no exception. We as humans love making sense of things by putting it in certain boxes and sadly, the boxes created and allocated for the port-style wine have been limited and misrepresentative of the full potential of the category.

There are a few assumptions surrounding this category, one of which is that port-style wine is mostly reserved for the more mature consumer. The younger generation perhaps doesn’t know port as well and if they have tasted it and introducing the style to the younger consumer has proved a great challenge. Another unfortunate assumption, although it appears to be somewhat changing, is that the enjoyment of port-style wines is reserved only for the short three winter months, paired either with a dessert, a cheese board or enjoyed on its own. Port-style wines may be mysterious to the average and beginner consumer, but it is important to emphasize that the beauty of port-style wine really lies in its versatility. Port-style wine not only works well in cocktails, but also surprisingly well with main meal pairings, such as soups, curries, and read meat dishes like steak.

South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm and a world-renowned tourist destination, has partnered with Sun Exchange (www.sunexchange.com), an innovative solar leasing platform, to harness the power of community and go solar.   A crowdsale for a 165 kilowatt (kW) solar plant to power Groot Constantia’s winemaking facilities and restaurants is now being hosted on the Sun Exchange platform. Through this crowdsale, people across South Africa and the globe can easily buy solar cells for R64.00 per cell, which will be installed in the solar plant that will power Groot Constantia. Once the 43,448 available solar cells are sold, the solar plant is built and starts generating electricity. Via the Sun Exchange platform, Groot Constantia will pay solar cell owners for the clean energy they produce for 20 years. The solar project crowdsale will run throughout the month of July until all solar cells sell out.
