Now, as I eagerly await the opportunity to savor the 2021 vintage, I know this is a wine that I want in my pantry or cellar. The Cape wine vintage of 2023 will be remembered as one of the wildest-weathered harvest seasons in recent history due to the incessant rain that hammered down over most of the Cape winelands from early March. A cool growing season in the vineyards on Stellenbosch’s Helderberg, home of Alto Estate, resulted in immense concentration in the grapes harvested for the making of Alto’s Estate Blend from the 2022 vintage. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Shiraz (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%), the Alto Estate Blend harnesses the three grape varieties for which Alto has become known since vineyards were first planted here over 100 years ago.

Edelspatz, the icon Noble Late Harvest Riesling from Simonsberg wine estate Delheim, reaffirmed its status as one of South Africa's leading Noble Late offerings by securing a five-star rating in the 2023 Platter's Wine Guide, the country's leading guide to ratings of Cape wines.

The top five-star rating was for Delheim's Edelspatz Riesling 2020, made from a Riesling vineyard block situated on the estate's Simonsberg terroir planted in 1985 that has been officially endorsed with Certified Heritage Vineyard status.
