The Cape Winemakers Guild and Strauss & Co. auctioneers are punctuating South Africa’s heritage month with two calendar highlights – the 38th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction which goes live over 30 September to 1 October and alongside it the CWG Protégé Programme Auction from 26 September to 3 October 2022. Together they signify one of South Africa’s longest-standing industries and flagship exports, valued at R10.2-billion per annum, and a space of innovation increasingly growing in diversity, inclusivity and global reputation.

Kanonkop Estate in Kanonkop Estate reaffirmed its position as a global wine icon by being awarded the trophy for Red Wine Producer of the Year at this year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), the world’s leading wine and spirits competition. Ten of the Kanonkop wines entered for this year’s IWSC were awarded medals by the team of international judges who scrutinised some 12 000 wines entered by producers from around the world.

Loxtonia, the family owned cidery in the Ceres Valley, celebrates their 4th anniversary making cider from 100% freshly pressed, home-grown apples, nurtured on the farm from orchard to bottle. Launched in October 2018 from humble beginnings, Loxtonia Cider has grown into an established South African brand in just four years, with 11 different premium apple cider varieties including two non-alcoholic options, and two bubbly-style Méthode Traditionelle ciders (MTC) – all delicious to the core with a taste for every palate.

Vin de Classique, producer of the premium Vrede range of wines, has launched a rare collection of wines crafted exclusively from a 1975 Pinotage block and made to mature for a further 20 to 25 years.

The Perron X collection vintage 2021, of which there are only 452 units available, comprises of four 750ml bottles and one Magnum or 1.5 l bottle, intended for aging and to be enjoyed over a period of five years - the ultimate experience for any wine enthusiast. Each bottle is numbered individually, hand-labelled, waxed sealed by hand, and beautifully presented in a wooden case.

Wines are the story of what came before. In the case of experienced winemaker Pieter Rossouw’s new creation, everything began with the grandfathers in whose honour he names his inaugural range - Gabriel & Gysbert.

Currently comprising a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon, Gabriel & Gysbert speaks of heritage as well as exceptional terroir. Bottled from the 2021 vintage, their fruit hails from the family farm in the age-old winelands of Bonnievale. This is where Pieter was raised.
