International Sauvignon Blanc Day Treat at Vergelegen
May is the month when International Sauvignon Blanc Day is celebrated, and to mark this occasion, Vergelegen wine estate is offering a winetasting with a difference in the heart of one of its most famous single vineyards on Saturday 7 May.
Guests have the rare opportunity to enjoy the Somerset West estate’s award-winning Sauvignon Blanc Reserve wine at its site of origin, the famous Schaapenberg Vineyard on the estate’s Schaapenberg Hill.
Over 300 years ago, original farm owner Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel chose this hill, 320 metres above sea level, as the lookout place for ships rounding Cape Point. Centuries later, following exacting climate and soil tests, this optimal grape growing location was selected for planting the 2.5 hectare single Sauvignon Blanc vineyard in 1988.
Guests will have the opportunity to sip chilled Schaapenberg Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, paired with delicious canapés, while drinking in the sweeping views of False Bay and the Helderberg Mountains. After this, they will enjoy Sauvignon Blanc-inspired platters at the hilltop winery in the company of the winemaking team. The cellar rooftop, surrounded by a fynbos garden, is the ideal location to watch the sunset.
This event should be on the bucket list of every Sauvignon Blanc fan. Wine master Tim Atkin rated this aromatic, elegant white wine, renowned for balancing ripe fruit with perfect acidity, at 93 and 94 points for 2019 and 2018 respectively. Platter’s Wine guide awarded both vintages 4½ stars.
