Global sensation, Drumstruck, launches at Silvermist Wine Estate this October

An authentic African experience right in the heart of the Constantia winelands will give tourists and locals the unique opportunity to journey through the history of African music, learn to play a drum and be entertained by the world’s best interactive drummers. The show will be paired with a wine tasting that includes a selection of wines from the top wine estates in Constantia, hosted by Silvermist owner and winemaker, Gregory Brink Louw.

On 21 October 2022, the Constantia Valley will come alive with the sounds of laughter and drumming, as the world’s first interactive theatre experience, Drumstruck returns to African soil. The show has toured across the globe, including an 18-month stint Off-Broadway in New York, Australia, Dollywood in the USA, and a 10-year run in Japan. Drumstruck producer Warren Lieberman explains that the theatre show was developed in the early 2000s “to bring the joyful, transformative process of communal drumming to audiences across the world.”

“We are so excited to be bringing Drumstruck home, to Cape Town,” says Lieberman. “The last performance we did was on stage with Dolly Parton before Covid forced us to return.” The Drumstruck show at Silvermist is a scaled-down version of the international production, but includes the same elements of storytelling, learning, showmanship and interactivity.

Facilitated by some of South Africa’s top percussionists and performers, the show creates a sense of Africa that is undeniably genuine and heartfelt. Audiences enter a space where an extensive and rare collection of indigenous African instruments is displayed and are taken on a journey through the musical heritage of Southern Africa – from the first drum through to the newest high-tech electronic instruments. Each audience member is provided with their own djembe drum and gets to play and sing along with the show, sharing in the collective celebration that exemplifies African music and culture.

Drumstruck has received rave reviews around the world. In Nashville, USA, Dolly Parton herself exclaimed, “I am dumbstruck by Drumstruck.” In New York, there were people who returned to see the show over 20 times, and the New York Times review asserted, “The beats that are its soul reaffirm the appealing power of the drum.” To quote the Edinburgh Fringe, Drumstruck is “a rare opportunity for the whole family…Slotting in somewhere between Stomp! and The Lion King, Drumstruck delivers on every level.”

Lieberman had been looking for the perfect venue for the show for several years and knew he had found a fit when he met Gregory Brink Louw, owner and winemaker at Silvermist Wine Estate. Greg is passionate about what he does, and the wine that he produces is the product of love and an unmoving care for both the natural environment and its people.

The Estate is located near the top of Constantia Nek, fifteen minutes from the Cape Town city centre. (It is also home to the world renowned La Colombe restaurant.) Silvermist is the only organic wine estate in Constantia, surrounded by the Table Mountain nature reserve, and offers guests some of the most diverse and unspoilt terrain in the city, with uninterrupted views of the Cape Peninsula.

“The magic combination of wine and music was irresistible, and the show that has emerged from this partnership will offer the best of both worlds,” says Lieberman. Before embarking on the African musical journey, guests will participate in a wine tasting facilitated by Gregory, who is a captivating presenter and storyteller.

Guests will have the opportunity to taste some exclusive South African wines including the rare Silvermist organic wines, and learn about the history of the Constantia valley, while taking in the extraordinary views of the peninsula. Children can participate too – in a child-friendly grape juice/rooibos tea tasting!

For guests who want to have a bite before or after the show, the View at Silvermist is open for a light meal.

There is also a shop at the venue boasting a curated selection of genuine South African and African musical instruments, art, collectables and curios, as well as a selection of the finest wines from the Constantia valley. Visitors will have time to stroll through the shop and around the rolling lawns of the estate and take a little piece of Africa home with them.
