Brookdale’s 2021 Mason Road Syrah voted Tim Atkin’s ‘Best Value Red of the Year

BROOKDALE’S 2021 MASON ROAD SYRAH VOTED TIM ATKIN’S ‘BEST VALUE RED OF THE YEAR’

Brookdale’s Mason Road wines commanded attention in Tim Atkin’s South Africa Special Report this year, when the 2021 Mason Road Syrah walked away with a Medal of Excellence as the 2022 Best Value Red of the Year.

At this new winery within the Paarl winelands, youthful winemaker Kiara Scott has not only achieved local and international success with the flagship Brookdale Chenin Blanc, but is now also making waves with the winery’s lifestyle range under the Mason Road label.

Each of the three young wines in the current Mason Road range (2021 vintage) managed a Tim Atkin score at 90 or more, but it was the Mason Road Syrah that led the pack with 92, followed by Mason Road Chenin Blanc and Serendipity Rosé, both scoring 90 (recommended retail price of the Mason Road range: R115 per bottle).

The 2020 vintage of Brookdale’s flagship single vineyard Chenin Blanc has already attracted keen interest in the wine world this year, before scoring a solid 93 rating in the Tim Atkin 2022 South Africa Special Report. Earlier this year at The Trophy Wine Show 2022, the same wine walked away with the coveted Rosa Kruger Trophy for the best Old-Vine Wine. Other accolades include Gold in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022; Double Gold in the South Africa Wine Awards London 2022; and a 17.5/20 rating by Jancis Robinson MW, wine correspondent for the Financial Times (USA).

The maiden vintage of Brookdale Sixteen Field Blend (2021) also received a 93 score from Tim Atkin. This unique wine is a celebration of the ancient, lost art of field blend winemaking, combining sixteen different white varieties which were interplanted as bush vines on Brookdale in 2018. These include cultivars that have flourished for centuries in France’s Rhône River Valley, the Mediterranean coastline, and the Iberian Peninsula. Planted together for structure and complexity, and some for acidity, the Sixteen Field Blend speaks to a wide range of flavours, as well as versatility and enjoyment with food.

Brookdale’s 2021 Mason Road Syrah presents a deep, purple core. The tasting notes describe the wine as rich, berry fruit nose with ripe, red plum and hints of white pepper with some floral notes in the background, in addition to notes of charcoal, faint liquorice, making way for blueberries, cassis with nuances of sweet, dried herbs. The palate displays layers of berry fruit with spices of pepper, cinnamon and clove and with a soft and sultry entry, supple tannins and finishes with an impressive length and a bright acidity.
