Boplaas receives highest CWG score from influential Wine Advocate
A Boplaas wine produced for the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild auction this year has received the highest rating at the event from one of the world’s most influential wine publications. US-based Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded a score of 95+ to the Boplaas CWG Cape Tawny Reserve 2005.
This year was the 38th anniversary of the auction, held just days ago in Cape Town. It is an annual highlight of the organisation whose membership is by invitation only. Boplaas cellarmaster Carel Nel was inducted in 1988.
In reviewing the wine for the authoritative Wine Advocate, Anthony Mueller said it received his “vote for the longest-lived wine for this year’s auction”. He writes: “Full-bodied and generously layered, the wine possesses elegance, refinement and purity. It’s an excellent wine that you’ll want to add to your cellar and deserves a spot among your aged ports. Bravo!”
A total of 513 lots were auctioned off at the annual CWG show, with a turnover of R13 985 500 (excl. VAT). Prices were up a whopping 30% from 2021.
The single harvest Boplaas CWG Cape Tawny Reserve 2005 received the highest average of R1473 (incl. VAT) per bottle. It was made from the finest Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional in low-yield vineyards and vinified. The most expressive wines were then selected, blended and aged in barrels for 16 years.
A second wine by Boplaas at the CWG, the Daniel’s Legacy 2020, achieved an average of R1 245 (incl. VAT) per bottle. It is a red blend of Portuguese varieties Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca, and Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It was created in memory of Carel’s father, Danie, and his fortunate mistake in planting Tinta Barocca instead of Shiraz. The occurrence in the early 70s, set Boplaas on a path crafting fine fortifieds and Portuguese table wines in the Cape.
The Daniel’s Legacy is similarly made by blending the finest barrels of wines made from old, low-yielding vines. Traditional vinification created the 2019 vintage that is fulsome, fruity and age-worthy.
The CWG wines are sold exclusively at the CWG Auction.
