Three splendid medals for Glen Carlou Vineyards

MUNDUS VINI is regarded as one of the most influential wine competitions in the world. With 11 000+ wines submitted annually the internationally accredited panel is comprised of trained oenologists; sommeliers and expert speciality retailers with above-average knowledge of wine; professional journalists and scientists. Their know-how and skilful wine experience have helped to establish this competition and make it known around the world. And with the recent release of awards, there are three splendid medals for Glen Carlou Vineyards for three splendid wines.

An 88-point Silver medal for Petite Chardonnay 2021 leads the delight as this recent release into the portfolio is that of a straight up, unhindered Chardonnay. ‘Having earned a nickname as our 8 buck chuck given the sub 10 Euro/Dollar/Pound price segment it plays in, this sans barrique unoaked wine does not as much as see a barrel passing its tanks in the winery! It is very much part of our Chardonnay thread and reflects our consumer centric approach to addressing market needs, for our South African home base and globally, across price point and style”, comments Strategic Marketing Lead, Berenice Barker.

Grand Classique 2020 is a Gold medal winner and recipient of an impressive 91 points. This is the 2nd MUNDUS Gold in a row for the red blend, following Gold for vintage 2018.  “Over the years this blend has been adjusted to be an accessible style for more immediate enjoyment, which is suited to a contemporary consumer.

Ready to enjoy now, but still with ageing potential. A somewhat unique wine as being Cabernet lead, it is comprised of all of the famous 5 Bordeaux grapes,” says MD Johan Erasmus. “We have Grand plans for this wine and Mundus’ recognition is indeed a credit to our wine growing and making teams”.

Winemaker Johnnie Calitz is enthused when working with Cabernet Sauvignon. Noting that when the first batch of harvested grapes arrived at the winery, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon was destined for great things. “Throughout its wine journey this Cabernet evolved at its own pace and stunned at every tasting assessment. The Gold medal of 91 points is the first award for this new vintage release. And I look forward to seeing how its journey as a distinctive example of Simonsberg Cabernet continues”.

These latest accolades are testament to an overarching strategy of continually innovating and always delighting in doing the ordinary, extraordinarily well. Extoling the virtues of a growth mindset, the next phase of Glen Carlou’s evolution is set to take this internationally regarded brand on an exciting course.
