Steenberg triumphs with 2 category winners in Platter’s SA Wine Guide

Steenberg Vineyards, the jewel in the crown of the Constantia Wine Valley, has excelled in the 2024 Platter’s South African Wine Guide with the best White Cape Bordeaux Blend and top Semillon overall.

The country’s definitive wine guide awarded top honours in the white Bordeaux-style blend category to the new, highly anticipated 2021 vintage of the Steenberg icon, Magna Carta, while Steenberg Semillon 2022 secured the Platter’s title of best Semillon.

Only produced in limited quantities in exceptional vintages, Steenberg Magna Carta 2021 is the farm’s ultimate declaration of quality and shows immense pedigree. This iconic blend of Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Semillon (30%) strongly reflects the cool climate Constantia terroir by showing absolute fruit purity and clean minerality. Prevalent notes of elderflower, jasmine and star-anise lead the aromatic profile that follows through to the palate with elegant layers of ground spice and fruit tempered by zesty acidity. Ever evolving and made to age, the wine shows beautifully now and will gain in complexity with further cellaring. Magna Carta is delicious with delicate seafood or light meat dishes.

Steenberg Semillon 2022 is a richly textured niche wine that owes its complexity to the ideal slow ripening conditions of the Constantia Valley in concert with perfect wood integration during 10 months’ maturation in a combination of new and older French oak barrels. Notes of apricot, cinnamon, dried pear and orange blossom greet you upon first inspection with hints of elderflower, gunflint and persimmon. The wine has a rich, almost waxy texture perfectly balanced with bright acidity.

Expect citrus and floral notes to linger long after the last sip. The weight and texture of Steenberg Semillon makes it an ideal food wine that can stand up to highly seasoned dishes.
