Onderkloof Wine Estate _ Take the Stairs and Taste Some Wine

First Satursday @ Onderkloof Wine Estate

In January Onderkloof Wines launched their #FirstSaturdays. This means that their tasting room will be open on the first Saturday of each month between 10:30 and 15H00.

Onderkloof is situated in the historical wine region of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, a mere 6 kilometers from the city centre and the ocean.

The name ONDERKLOOF loosely translates to; “BELOW THE VALLEY” and is inspired by the Pass leading through the Hottentots Holland Mountain range.

We arrived at the estate and took a leisurely drive up the gravel road leading to the tasting room whilst taking in the views. On the steps of the tasting room we were greeted by Luanne  Musfeld and Alex (Alex is the couple’s Ridgeback). The tasting room brims with character and immediately captivates you with its spiral stairway leading to the wine making area downstairs.

A seat on the comfortable sofa and a super chilled atmosphere made for a great afternoon. The tasting room reminds me of a Victorian home filled with stories untold. It boasts an enviable Chandelier and a long table which adds great character to the room (which also doubles as a Chapel).

With the room filled with laughter and wine glasses clinking, time flew by.

Yves Musfeld, winemaker at Onderkloof can be described as humble and attentive. He gave each and every visitor to the tasting room a personal experience sharing the tasting notes. Yves studied Viticulture and Enology at Geisenheim University in Germany. He also did his winemaker apprenticeship in Switzerland and acted as assistant winemaker at Casa Lo Alto in Spain and Clos Du Val in Napa Valley before taking the reins at Onderkloof. Drawing on his past experiences his produced some exceptional wines.

Below are only a few of the award winning wines produced by Onderkloof Wines, please note not all wines were tasted on the day

  • 2017 Cabernet Franc At R70 is really worthy of the awards received  in fact would be willing to pay a bit more for this one
  • 2017 Floreal Blanc de Blanc  – R60 a bottle this blend of Muscat d’Alexandrie and Chenin Blanc has flavor of dried apricot and veld flowers, the palate shows gooseberries and has a dry finish
  • 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon , Is a full bodied wine that hit all the right notes.
  • Pinotage  -Unfortunately I did not taste this one, but from what I could see in the everyone seemed to enjoy it.
  • I did taste the 2017 Chardonnay – The palate was full and rich with a buttery after taste. This Chardonnay is 100% wild, barrel fermented and matured on full lees until bottling. ( I must admit this was my least favorite as I prefer my Chardonnay unwooded)

Some of the awards include

Cabernet Franc 2011: Peoples Choice Awards 2014, gold
Floreal Blanc de Blanc 2013: Peoples Choice Awards 2014, silver
Chardonnay 2015: Peoples Choice Awards 2015, silver
Cabernet Franc 2014: Peoples Choice Awards 2015, double gold
Cabernet Franc 2014: Tim Atkin SA report 2017, 91 points & award for Best Value Red SA 2017

Later that day, Yves took us on a cellar tour telling us more about his wine- making style even informing us that one of the rooms used to be a squash room. What’s even better is that Luanne and Yves had their wedding reception in the very same cellar (check out Onderkloof Website for pictures) taking wedding venues to the next level.

What I enjoyed most about my visit is the extremely laid-back vibe and one on one interaction with the winemaker.

Why not make a day (or night) of your visit by booking one of the estate’s Self –Catering Cottages,Conference Rooms or Function Venues? Once again it was Wine for the Win; Doctor Wine came through and I am so glad that I managed to pull through and stay for the duration of the event. On the 3rd of February Onderkloof released their 2017 Chenin Blanc, and I will definitely be making my way back there to enjoy the Sunset x Chenin.
