NEDERBURG BASKS IN CABERNET SAUVIGNON LIMELIGHT

Nederburg keeps on earning top local and international awards for its Cabernet Sauvignon wines – true vinous treasures, especially for wine collectors and connoisseurs.

The most recent accolade is the rating of five stars for its 2019 The Manor House Cabernet Sauvignon in the new edition (2023) of Platter’s South African Wine Guide, regarded as the most authoritative guide to South African wine.  Five-star ratings are reserved for wines that are judged to be “superlative South African classics”, and scored 95 points or more on the 100-point rating scale.

The same ultra-premium wine placed in the top 10 of Winemag’s recently released 2022 Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report, scoring 94 points, while Nederburg’s 2018 Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon also achieved top 10 status with a score of 93 points.

Platter’s four-and-a-half star ratings were bestowed on no less than six top wines: Nederburg’s 2018 Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon (94 points), 2019 Heritage Heroes The Brew Master Bordeaux-style red blend (dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon) (94 points), 2018 Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon (93 points), as well as its 2021 Heritage Heroes The Anchor Man Old Vine Chenin Blanc (92 points), 2019 Heritage Heroes The Motorcycle Marvel Rhône-style red blend (led by Carignan) (92 points) and its 2021 The Winemasters Noble Late Harvest (94 points).

Earlier this year, international prestige platforms like The Drinks Business Global Cabernet Sauvignon Masters and Decanter World Wine Awards, as well as South Africa’s Veritas Awards and Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards (both featuring a mix of international and local judges) have also rewarded the cellar for excellence in Cabernet Sauvignon and other wines.

Nederburg’s Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, was declared a Master in the 2022 The Drinks Business Global Cabernet Sauvignon series. The wine was also deemed one of the publication’s top 12 Cabernet Sauvignons of the year (the only South African Cabernet Sauvignon on the list), rubbing shoulders with the likes of iconic Trefethen and Penfolds.

As if to underscore the age-worthiness of this special-edition Cabernet, the 2009 vintage of the R163 celebrated a Cabernet Sauvignon trophy triumph at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, while Nederburg itself was crowned the competition’s 2022 South African Producer of the Year.

Matching the moment, Nederburg was also singled out as one of the top performing cellars at the Veritas Awards this year, coming away with five double gold and three gold medals. Interestingly, these were awarded across the multi-tiered range, to embrace the Private Bin, Heritage Heroes and The Winemasters offerings.

Top scores were earned by Cabernets as well as by a variety of noble late harvest wines and a Chenin blanc.

Meanwhile, the 2018 vintage of Nederburg’s Private Bin Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded gold by the judges of the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards. And earlier this year, the 2020 Baronne (Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz) appeared in the top 10 of this year’s Winemag Prescient Signature Red Blends Report, with a score of 92.
