Have you tried the Vondeling Wines Savoury Cheesecake and Wine Pairing ?

Just off Voor Paardeberg Road in the distance we found a beautiful white chapel that leads to a picturesque scene: the ever-changing leaves of the vineyards.  The tasting room is cosy with a rustic appearance and classic country charm. Greeted by the sounds of a crackling fire, a glass of wine and inviting laughter, immediately made it feel like home.

The Wedding Chapel at Vondeling Wines

This was my first visit Vondeling Wines, although I have enjoyed their Merlot in the past. The intention of our visit was to experience the unique Savoury Cheese Cake and Wine pairing; pairings like these excite me as they combine a South African classic matched with an elegant wine. I could not wait to satisfy my curiosity.

Lets Dig In

The savoury cheesecake made with a variation of cheeses including cream cheese, parmesan, mozzarella and cheddar cheese (swoon,) was a decadent and melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Our first pairing was the Salmon cheesecake paired with the Vondeling Chenin Blanc.  In my view, this was the pairing we could not wait to sink our teeth into, the Chenin Blanc enlivened the cheesecake with its citrus notes and flinty freshness.

Next up: The Chicken & Peppadew cheesecake paired with Vondeling Babiana; a white blend made up of 64% Chenin Blanc, 19% Viognier, 8.5% Roussanne & 8.5% Grenache Blanc). This meticulously executed pairing was a highlight for me, each ingredient contributed to the greatness of this pairing.

The Biltong cheesecake paired with Vondeling Monsonia was bound to please the most demanding of taste buds; paired with the Monsonia a blend of Shiraz 67%, Mourvédre 21%, Carignan 8% and Grenache 4%, each sip is delicate yet vibrant, unravelling flavours of the cheesecake resulting in a lingering finish.

Last, but certainly not least…

Salami cheesecake paired with Vondeling Baldrick Shiraz; a pairing that has the potential to become a wintertime staple (if I had the knack for making savoury cheesecake). The Baldrick Shiraz perfectly compliment the elements of the cheesecake.

I must admit that I was replete. Each portion was generous, rich in flavour & very very filling. This tasting is a must do for cheesecake lovers, wine  lovers or food guru’s.

We lingered around for a while and enjoyed Vondeling Wines on the shaded terrace, however since we are in the heart of winter, the fireplace might be a better option.
