Deux Frere Boutique Wines~ Two Brothers

HAND CRAFTED BOUTIQUE WINES

Beautiful Cabernet vines usher you to the wine-tasting area of this boutique winery situated on the foothill of the Simonsberg Mountains.

In 2008 the Du Toit brothers Stephen and Retief developed a boutique vineyard on Le Present; making the “Deux Frères Wines” dream a reality. Le Present nestles on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains in the Stellenbosch Winelands District.

Stephen the winemaker studied viticulture and Elsenburg and started making wine under the mentorship of Francois Naudé in 2006. His gained experience from time spent in France during harvest at Chateau Montlese and Chateau Desteux in St. Emillion and also Chateau La Clemence in Pomorol. Retief has pursued a career in the finance and is responsible for the farms finances, he also loves to get involved in the tasting room from time to time.Deux Frères Wines is synonymous with charm, style and glamour. Tastings are done by appointment only and facilitated by Rene Du Toit, who sees to the day to day running of the winery. We made our way through the tasting area where Stephen has a very hand on approach to winemaking. Interestingly the wine-making area was converted from a shed into this cosy room which stacks 42 000 litre barrels on top of each other. I must warn you that it’s easy to fall in-love with Deux Frères Wines especially Rene, Stephen and the family’s dogs.

Just chilling

Seated comfortably on the patio we tasted through their selection of wines. We started with the Deux Frères 2017 Chenin Blanc, lightly oaked with pear, pineapple flavours and stone fruit is delightful on the nose. The appealing savoury undertones and light texture makes for a good palate. This Chenin Blanc is easy drinking accompanied or unaccompanied.

Chenin Blanc

Next up was the 2017 Blanc De Noir with beautiful bright salmon hues in the glass. This wine reminds me of spring blossoms. Lush aromas of candy floss and Turkish delight leads to a fruity palate. The grapes are destalked, crushed and moved directly to the basket for pressing. Continuous tasting occurs whilst keeping a close eye on the colour of the juice. Once settled the juice is cold fermented in the tank. After fermentation its left on the lees for 3 weeks and thereafter prepared for bottling. This Blanc De Noir is the perfect companion for any starter and sensational on its own

The showstopper has to be the 2013 Fraternite.  Shiraz / Mouvedre

Besides winning a Gold Medal at the South African Wine Awards. Intense ruby garnet in colour, this superbly crafted wine boast aromas of dried prunes (my dad loved these) apricot and mushrooms. The palate is expressive with a great structure and tannins. The American oak compliments the wine with some sweetness of black cherries/ almost like liquorice. I really loved the sophistication and elegance of this wine.

2013 Fraternite

I must admit, I really struggled to leave Deux Frères Wines and look forward to having my friends join me for a wine tasting experience with platters.
