De Meye Wines #AtoZofStellenbosch

Behold the changing leaves and enjoy the crisp breeze

Greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours and memories of harvest 2018, the “The De Meye Estate” is a remarkable family-owned boutique winery, situated in the lush Mulservlei area.

Entrance at De Meye Wines

This unique little spot has been the home and farming ground to the Myburgh family for five generations. In the earlier years the family used to farm with cattle as the area was popular for cattle farms. The estate is named after the De Meye river in Holland, the birthplace of the first Myburgh, who came to farm in South Africa in 1665.

On this chilly Sunday morning we were greeted by owner and general manager Phillip De Meye .

After a short walk on the estate, Philip showed us the vineyards and the organic vegetable garden where the owners of The Table restaurant grows some of their vegetables.

Vegetable Garden

De Meye wines is a great representation of the values and principles passed onto the family over the years. Philip has managed to keep the original spirit, stay true to his authentic roots and farm sustainably. Winemaker Marcus Milner has been instrumental when it comes to producing elegant, personal hand crafted wines which appeals to the local and international palate. Having been the winemaker for the past 19 years, Marcus has mastered the unique terroir of the region. As mentioned to Phillip it would be great to do a tasting showcasing his wines over the past 2 decades.

The 2013 Trutina a wine you have to try

Besides the incredible wine, I enjoyed was the ambiance of the wine estate. There is no substitution for family, food and great hospitality. I was given the option to do the wine tasting at the fire place, but given the magnificent views I’m sure you figured out that I’ve opted to go outside.

ORGANIC LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

DID YOU KNOW, De Meye was one of the first wine farms in South Africa to produce lavender essential oil.
“Isabella Lavender Oil is named after Philip Myburgh’s mother, who lives on the farm. The Lavender grown at De Meye is Lavandula Intermedia, also called Provence Lavender. It is produced organically and the utmost care is taken to ensure the highest quality of natural lavender oil. The Isabella oil is made and sold in small quantities on the farm and is available from a few selected outlets in the Stellenbosch and Boland area.”
