Constantia Uitsig | Heritage Market

Quality Wines and Family Friendly

Constantia Uitsig has a vibrant history of wine production, but it prides itself on its commitment to a green building, farming practices and its bio-diversity. The farm aims to become a haven for both indigenous flora and bird populations.

Methods utilised by Constantia Uitsig includes the use of cover cropping, mulching and integrated pest management programmes. The flowers are a central part of the farm, enhancing it aesthetically but also drawing insects to the farm which reiterated its commitment to green farming.

Lately there’s been a flurry of activity at Constantia Uitsig so I was very excited about my visit.            When you arrive at the venue, you are greeted by the winemaker’s glass boot (Cinderella reference). The new cellar at Constantia Uitsig has a high glass ceiling that is visible when entering or driving pass.

The newly opened Heritage Market has a row of charming cottages featuring the finest artisan craft producers and the Uitsig Wine Shop. The addition of the markets complements the heritage and aesthetic of the location – modernising the functionality of the estate without compromising on its history.

The Wines

I tasted the Semillon, MCC and Chardonnay, three wines that I really enjoyed.

Semillon 2015

On a hot summers day this chilled glass of Semillon was a good way to quench my thirst. Coming through on the nose are notes of lime, orange and papaya. The palate is a full-bodied wine with a wonderful rounded finish. The Semillon 2015 pairs well with salmon or a salad.

Method Cap Classique 2014 (Sold Out)

Although sold out, I would highly recommend that you try the next vintage of MCC (2015). The Methode Cap Classique is made from Chardonnay grapes only and comes from a single vineyard that is almost 3 decades old. On the nose you’ll get hints of almond and apple . The MCC has a fine mousse and a structured savoury palette leading to a satisfyingly salty finish.

Unwooded Chardonnay 2016

There’s something about this unwooded Chardonnay that makes you want more! Juicy red apples and lemon zest are forthcoming on the nose with apple and fresh naartjie (tangerine) on the palate.

Food

With a wide variety of food to choose from you’ll find yourself overwhelmed, we were lucky enough to sample a bit of everything on offer.

Constantia Uitsig caters for all and there is something available for the whole family. They have facilities for persons who are differently abled (wheel chair friendly) and boast a variety of eateries to suite each palette, dietary requirement and budget. The area is popular with tourists so make sure you book ahead to avoid disappoint. They will try to accommodate walk-ins if there are openings.
